Just a Really Great Company...

I wanted to take a moment and write a few words about Tradition Creek. I had never ordered anything from them before but was impressed with their variety of camping stuff and military surplus. I ordered an army gor-tex jacket that was too large so I emailed them to see if I could return it.

Most surplus type places would say no, but within a few minutes I got an email back from the owner saying “send it on back” I did and they refunded me for the jacket. I have since ordered a number of things from them and have been impressed with each order.

The customer service combined with the flat rate shipping really can’t be beat. I think we as consumers often forget that the smaller companies like Tradition Creek will provide a much better deal to us then the big stores because they really care for us.

Thompson Center (T/C) Has Terrible Customer Service

I have come to expect poor customer service from certain companies that come into contact in my life on a regular basis. For example, I wouldn't expect a high level of customer service from McDonald's because you simple get what you pay for in this world. On the other hand I would expect to receive a very high level of customer service from a major firearms manufacturer. Two World Record Trout in One Week

On September 9, 2009 Tom Healy of Rockford Michigan landed what is now the new Michigan state record brown trout and should be the all-tackle world record. If you haven't seen the pictures I include one in the this post below. This is an enormous fish caught from the Big Manistee River. The previous Michigan state record brown trout weighed in at 34 lbs. 10 oz (but Tom Healy's monster smashes this record weighing in at 41 lbs. 7.25 oz. The Quiznos sandwich chain said Tuesday it has adopted a new animal-welfare policy for the eggs, pork and turkey it buys.

The Denver-based chain said it came up with the policy in conjunction with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
"We are always trying to find new ways to be better corporate citizens, and we'll continue to seek those ways," Quiznos spokesman Joe Hodas said.

Quiznos will buy more eggs from cage-free chickens, more pork raised in crate-free environments and more turkeys that are killed using a method that PETA described as more humane.

The changes will be phased in.

The policy says Quiznos will buy 4 percent of its eggs this year from producers who don't put chickens in cramped cages, with a goal of raising that to 10 percent in five years. The chain also removed eggs from three of its four cookies on the menu.

About 1 percent of Quiznos' pork products this year will be raised in crate-free environments, with a goal of reaching 15 percent in 2012, under the policy.

Purchasing preference will be given to suppliers who use cage- or crate-free systems.

Quiznos also pledged to buy 5 percent of its turkeys by 2010 from suppliers who use "controlled atmosphere killing," in which the birds' oxygen supply is replaced by other gases. PETA contends that in conventional slaughter, birds' bones are broken and throats slashed, often while the birds are conscious.

PETA Vice President Bruce Friedrich says his group still prefers that diners buy Quiznos' vegetarian sandwich but he praised the chain for the new standards.

Privately held Quiznos has about 5,000 stores across the U.S.

Buy American?!? Is it really American?!?!?

I would like to clear up is the whole buy American issue. Everyone thinks the F-150 is a great American Truck and it is but it is NOT made in America. It is assembled here but that is about it. I will explain in detail what I mean by that. To make a plastic part like the dash-board or the center console you need to make a mold for that. You have to machine steel in 2 halves in the shape you want the part to come out in. This is a very simple way of explaining it but it is very technical thing with high tolerances. Most molds have to be built with in about .002 to .005 of an inch tolerance. A human hair is .003 of an inch and a piece of paper is .005 thick for an example. Now that I have explained that I will get to the part that will really piss you off!! I worked on a group of molds for the 2009 F-150 a couple of years ago. All of the molds built the center counsel and the instrument panel. The company that will make the plastic part is the molder and they actually inject the mold with plastic to make the part and then ship it to Ford for assembly of the truck. Summit polymers in Kalamazoo, MI are the molder for this package of tools. So the way it works is Ford wants the parts for as cheap as possible because they are trying to cut costs therefore Summit polymers gets the job for a rock bottom price. The price is so low in fact that there is no money to build the molds in the United States. Ford knows this by the way!!! This is where the shop that I worked at comes in, I worked there for about 6 years. They build molds and are based in Utica MI. Summit hires them to build the molds for the F150 center Console. It took about 10 or 11 molds to build for all the parts needed for the center console. We can’t build all 11 molds for as cheap as summit and Ford want, so we send 9 of them to China and keep 2 for ourselves. The shop in China builds them in a few months and ship them back to us. They test run the molds to make sure that they are good. If they pass inspection then they come back to us and the final thing that is done is the MADE IN THE USA logo and the FORD label are machined on the Mold. NO BS!!! If look at Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and BMW they have built somewhere around a dozen major plants around the US in the last few years. Ask yourself this question when was the last time the big 3 was built a plant that was in the US that added jobs. If you look at foreign cars sales 65 percent of them are built here in one way or another. I own 2 GM cars by the way before you attack me. I am not telling people what to do I just want you to no the truth on the matter. The domestic car companies like to say buy American but they don’t practice what they preach. I will gladly elaborate on this China subject further if anyone likes or you don’t believe me.

Winfrey's Chicago-based Harpo Productions says the talk show host is on hiatus and not available for comment.

Previous winners of the PETA award include U.S. Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia in 2007 and the founders of the San Francisco-based cleaning product company Method in 2006.

Primos Buck Roar Sucks!!!

I bought a primos buck roar grunt tube a few weeks ago for a wopping 24 bucks at gander mountian. The thing sounds great when it is set to dominate buck, but if you set it to any of the other settings( ie doe grunt or young buck grunt) it doesn't work at all !!!!! A few weeks ago I had a small buck in front me chasing a doe so I switched the buck roar to a doe bleat setting and it didn't make any sound no matter how hard I blew on the call. On opening morning I tried to use the call set on young buck so I blew on the call and all I got was a hissing sound . For almost 25 dollars I would expect a little better performance!! The problem with a grunt tube that will only work on a dominate buck setting is that it scares every deer off that isn't a 300 pound 12 pointer!! Last time I checked they aren't hiding behind every tree!! I would not reccomend this call to anyone except when calling to a monster buck. I don't know if the call has manufactering defect or the call just sucks I think the latter!!

Summit Viper SS Review

This weekend my buddy and I were walking our hunting property when we were hit with the ominous stench of a rotting carcass. After searching for a few minutes we came across a deer carcass which by the looks of it was shot in the chest with an arrow by our neighbor and dragged onto our property. The carcass was only 10 feet from the property line and you could clearly see where it had been dragged through the leaves. Unless you live in a cave you probably have heard that Jennifer Granholm inacted a law that bans baiting in Michigan. This action was taken in response to Michigan's first documented case of Cronic Wasting Disease (CWD). For years CWD was found in animals in some midwestern states but was primarily contained in western states. When Americans nominate their presidential candidates next year, the Second Amendment won't be the first thing on their minds. The issue didn't even appear in a recent CNN poll that found that the economy, Iraq, health care, immigration, and terrorism are the nation's biggest concerns.

But in a country where 36 percent of Democrats and 48 percent of Republicans have firearms in their homes, the issue is still a locked and loaded one for candidates of both parties.

Republican presidential hopefuls, as expected, worked hard to win over the members of the National Rifle Association at the organization's convention in September. But even otherwise gun-shy Democrats are expressing Strange New Respect for gun owners.

Recently, Senator Barack Obama told a Harlan, Iowa, crowd that his wife Michelle had been traveling "up...in eastern Iowa...and she said 'Boy, it's really pretty up here,' but she said, 'But you know, I can see why if I was living out here, I'd want a gun. Because, you know, 9-1-1 is going to take some time before somebody responds.'"

So now we know that Obama's wife has some vaguely pro-Second Amendment views. Her husband, and many other presidential aspirants, are proving harder to get a bead on. Before they cast ballots for president, there are two Big Questions that informed gun owners want answered. They are:

1. Will candidate X veto anti-gun legislation? And by "anti-gun legislation" we mean assault weapon bans; gun registration; and attempts to repeal the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (Lawful Commerce Act hereafter), which prohibits lawsuits against firearms manufacturers when criminals use their products.

2. Will he appoint judges who will strike down gun-control laws? This is especially important because the Supreme Court will rule on the constitutionality of D.C.'s handgun ban next summer. A little judicial-branch muscle in the aftermath of a pro-gun ruling could set the tone for the next several decades, at least.

TO TAKE THE DEMOCRATS first, it's worth mentioning that not one official website of the three frontrunners prominently features the candidate's stance on the right to keep and bear arms.

However, the issue isn't totally ignored. John Edwards actually makes some pro-gun statements under his plan for "Restoring Hope to Rural America." He supports gun rights in a limited fashion, but usually links them to hunting rather than self-defense. Edwards also opposed the Lawful Commerce Act -- what, you thought a former trial lawyer would vote to limit legal liabilities? -- and supports assault weapon bans.

The other leading Democrats candidates have clearer positions that they're currently trying very hard to ignore. Clinton has a long-established anti-gun record. While in the Illinois legislature, Obama voted against giving leniency to people caught defending their homes with banned handguns.

Edwards's stance could peel off rural voters while ceding some big-city liberal votes to Clinton and Obama in the primaries. This is part of his overall strategy, including his faux working-class image and an emphasis on rural poverty.

It could work. Rural-dwellers made up a quarter of 2004 presidential election voters, and they're under-served by the other two candidates. Many big-city heavy states (California, New York, Massachusetts, Illinois) won't hold their primaries until February 5, giving Edwards time to build momentum in smaller states.

Edwards's moderate pro-gun position could help even more come general election time. Republicans only narrowly won rural areas in the 2006 midterms and aren't making much progress. In a general election, increased rural support won't mean decreased urban support, because city liberals will still vote Democrat.

THERE ISN'T A LARGE constituency in the Republican Party for gun control. Half of Republicans have firearms in their homes and few want to go grab guns from others. As such, Republican contenders play down any gun-grabbing tendencies they might have at least until the general election, and preferably until after they've left the White House and started writing their memoirs.

Those Republicans who aren't gung-ho about the Second Amendment walk a tightrope. They don't want to lose gun owners' support by not coming far enough in their direction, but the candidates are also wary of moving too far away from their former position, too fast. The shift can attract the "flip-flopper" label, which endangers their standing with both pro- and anti-gun voters.

Republican voters are a little more demanding than Democrats on this issue. They worry not only about stated positions but also about trustworthiness. Fred Thompson, Mike Huckabee and John McCain have basically strong, consistent records. Though McCain supports some control measures, he's done so pretty regularly. Rudy Giuliani and Mitt "I shot me some varmints" Romney, on the other hand, are coming off stints as Northeastern RINOs. They're praying to a benevolent Judeo-Christian Deity that voters won't hold their records against them.

Giuliani ran a city with a handgun permit system that bordered on a ban, and even today professes a sort-of federalist, ruralist interpretation of the Second Amendment. He's said, "maybe you have one solution [in a big city] and in another place, more rural, more suburban, other issues, you have a different set of rules," which would put him in roughly the same category as John Edwards and Michelle Obama. He has claimed to think D.C.'s outright ban is unconstitutional, but he's never bothered to explain why it's unconstitutional while the law he enforced is A-OK. Also, as mayor he sued the gun industry for legally distributing its products to government-licensed dealers.

As an olive branch to conservatives, Giuliani has promised to appoint "strict-constructionist" judges and stressed his respect for federalism. Conservatives have been skeptical on both fronts, reacting cooly to his NRA address and wincing at the notion that a fundamental constitutional right should depend on regional politics or population density.

As Massachusetts governor, Romney defended the state's "tough gun laws." He waited for his presidential campaign to join the NRA and discover that the Second Amendment protects an individual right. He claims the only gun law he would sign is an assault-weapon ban, and like Giuliani he professes strict-constructionism.

If Giuliani or Romney manages to escape hostile fire in the primaries, the nominee's positions might prove attractive to some moderates. But he would have a much harder time than any of the basically pro-gun candidates in bringing home the normal pro-gun vote, if the Supreme Court strikes D.C.'s gun ban down, or harnessing the anger of tens of millions of Americans, if the Supremes narrowly decide to ignore the clear meaning of the Second Amendment.

THE GREAT WILD CARD in all this is the National Rifle Association. The Washington Times recently reported that the organization was considering breaking with tradition by making a primary-election endorsement. Head lobbyist Chris Cox cited the "front-loading" of the process -- if neither party picks a true Second Amendment defender, there'll be no one worthy of a general-election NRA endorsement. The organization doesn't want to sit out the way it did in 1992 and 1996.

Even the NRA's fiercest critics have to concede that its efforts -- from grassroots activism to Capitol Hill lobbying -- bring results. A recent Independence Institute study found that, in any election for a seat in the House of Representatives, an endorsement can increase a candidate's share of the vote by 3 to 5 percent per 10,000 NRA members in that district.

If Giuliani and Romney's gun records set them back a bit now, an NRA intervention could tip the balance in many close primary elections, especially if an announcement were made between Iowa and New Hampshire...

OK so the season has been going on for a month now. And I am sad to say it hasnt been one for the books yet. But there is plenty of time left, right now we r at 107 birds down. If this south wind ever stops and we get some good northern weather the ducks wont be too far behind then. If anyone is still interested in going out for a hunt let me know.

2007 Duck opener

OK so this opener was alright. Up in saginaw bay there were plenty of birds around, but the weather was bad. Almost 90 degrees adn when you ahve waders and are walking through mud up to your knees becasue there is no water it seekms alot hotter then that. We ended up with our limit on saturday morning. I have pictures of the hunt, they will be up soon.

I am doing guided duck hunts out of the St.Clair flats area. $50 a person for eight or so hours of hunting, limit 3 people. Father and son special of $75. All you need is a gun and license, I will bring the decoys, boat and motor. We will start off at the Harrsens Island refuge and depending on how that goes we will either hunt there or head out somewhere else. Since I cant control if the birds are going to be flying on any specific day you only pay if you shoot. If you have any questions contact me at

Michigan Archery Season Update

The Michigan archery season is in full swing and opening day could not have come soon enough. At deer camp on Sunday afternoon the trash talking was abundant as slammy decided to start calling his shot for opening morning. Unfortunately the Michigan weather did not cooperate as a low pressure system brought unseasonably warm weather along with thunderstorms that quickly reduced the overall confidence level at camp. I bought a bird feeder. I hung it on my back porch and filled it with seed. What a beauty of a bird feeder it is as I filled it lovingly with seed. Within a week we had hundreds of birds taking advantage of the continuous flow of free and easily accessible food.

But then the birds started building nests in the boards of the patio, above the table, and next to the barbecue.

Then came the poop. It was everywhere: on the patio tile, the chairs, the table...everywhere!

Then some of the birds turned mean. They would dive bomb me and try to peck me even though I had fed them out of my own pocket.

And other birds were boisterous and loud. They sat on the feeder and squawked and screamed at all hours of the day and night and demanded that I fill it when it got low on food.

After a while, I couldn't even sit on my own back porch anymore. So I took down the bird feeder and in three days the birds were gone. I cleaned up their mess and took down the many nests they had built all over the patio.

Soon, the back yard was like it used to be...quiet, serene and no one demanding their rights to a free meal.

Now let's see..... our government gives out free food, subsidized housing, free medical care, and free education and allows anyone born here to be an automatic citizen.

Then the illegals came by the tens of thousands.
Suddenly our taxes went up to pay for free services; small apartments are housing 5 families; you have to wait 6 hours to be seen by an emergency room doctor; ! your child's 2nd grade class is behind other schools because over half the class doesn't speak English.

Corn Flakes now come in a bilingual box; I have to 'press one' to hear my bank talk to me in English, and people waving flags other than 'Old Glory' are squawking and screaming in the streets, demanding more rights and free liberties.

Just my opinion, but maybe it's time for the government to take down the bird feeder. If you agree, pass it on; if not, continue cleaning up the poop

My Muzzleloader Dilema

I have been spending quite a bit of time researching muzzleloaders to try and figure out what type of setup I want to purchase. The only blackpowder hunting I have done in the past was done with borrowed equipment. After several incidents last season that involved missed opportunities on nice bucks during firearm season in Michigan CB375HH talked me into picking up a good muzzleloader. to know why the ant should be warm and well fed while others are cold and
starving.

CBS, NBC, PBS, CNN, and ABC show up to provide pictures of the shivering
grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table
filled with food. America is stunned by the sharp contrast.

How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is
allowed to suffer so?

Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with the grasshopper, and everybody cries
when they sing, "It's Not Easy Being Green."

Jesse Jackson stages a demonstration in front of the ant's house where the
news stations film the group singing, "We shall overcome." Jesse then has
the group kneel down to pray to God for the grasshopper's sake.

Nancy Pelosi & John Kerry exclaim in an interview with Larry King that the
ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call for an
immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his fair share.

Finally, the EEOC drafts the Economic Equity and Anti-Grasshopper Act
retroactive to the beginning of the summer. The ant is fined for failing to
hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left to pay
his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the government.

Hillary gets her old law firm to represent the grasshopper in a defamation
suit against the ant, and the case is tried before a panel of federal judges
that Bill Clinton appointed from a list of single-parent welfare recipients.

The ant loses the case.

The story ends as we see the grasshopper finishing up the last bits of the
ant's food while the government house he is in, which just happens to be the
ant's old house, crumbles around him because he doesn't maintain it. The ant
has disappeared in the snow. The grasshopper is found dead in a drug related
incident and the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a gang of spiders
who terrorize the once peaceful neighborhood.

Microsoft Funds the Anti-Hunting Movement

(Columbus) – Microsoft has rejected a U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance request to abandon its partnership with the nation’s leading anti-hunting organization.

Microsoft, the software giant, will make a $100,000 donation to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and is partnering with the group on a pilot program called the i’m Initiative. Through the new program, whenever a Windows Live Messenger user has a conversation using i’m, Microsoft will give a portion of the program’s advertising revenue to one of ten organizations selected by the user. The HSUS is one of the choices, and there is no limit to the amount of money that can be donated.

The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance, the nation’s leading sportsmen’s advocacy organization, has urged Microsoft to end its support of HSUS, but the company refused. According to Microsoft representative Tara Kriese, Microsoft believes the i’m Initiative is “a great way to enable people to help causes that are important to them.”

“Microsoft is going to pour hundreds of thousands of dollars, probably more, into an organization that recently issued a manifesto that targets hunting for extinction,” said USSA President Bud Pidgeon. “If there was ever a time for sportsmen to take grassroots action, this is it.”

The Humane Society of the United States opposes all animal use, including trapping, hunting and fishing. It was a key player in the campaigns to outlaw dove hunting in Michigan, trapping in California, and black bear hunting in Colorado. The organization has created a hit list of hunting traditions that it hopes to dismantle, including bear hunting and hunting with hounds.

“The HSUS already has a multi-million dollar budget that it invests in legislative and ballot campaigns to ban trapping and hunting,” said Pidgeon. “The partnership that it has formed with Microsoft, the maker of the Xbox, will allow the organization to make money hand over fist, and continue to fund efforts to ban outdoor sports.”

Sportsmen can make a difference in an issue like this. Companies such as Iams, General Mills, Accor Hotels, Pet Safe, Sears, and Ace Hardware ended relationships with HSUS after thousands of sportsmen levied strong protest.

In 2002, Jeep raised the ire of sportsmen when it aired a blatantly, anti-hunting commercial called the “Deer Hunter.” After a flood of sportsmen’s contacts, Jeep pulled the commercial in three days.

Last Chance Turkey

I was fretting and fuming over my last chance to get a 2007 Tom on Saturday afternoon. Had watched two toms come towards me on Friday evening for about 2 hours when they finally mosied over the farm ditch, in full strut, following 5 hens and got to about 60 yards. I tried to make up some distance by sneaking to the edge of the woodlot and a Hen busted me from behind. She let out a call that froze all seven and then another that sent them packing!! Here it was mid-afternoon Sat & I wasn't seeing nothing except for 2 far-off hens that weren't thinking about coming my way. So I put in an emergency call to Turkey God. Low & behold he was free Sun morn. He told me to hightail it out of there nn later than 6:PM so that the resident turks could roost in their normal trees near me w/o me scaring them out of the area. I did what I was advised and met the God first thing in the AM. Got to the spot a tad late - scaring one hen from her roost - but set up near Sat's spot. Turkey God began his calling and before 20 mins were up we got some responses from hens and then a Tom. With the God's ears tracking the bird thru the woodlot we were pretty positive of his entry into the field. The tom followed a hen out and started heading away from us and toward her. Looking lilke it was "now or never" I levelled the Benelli Super Black Eagle and hoped the 80 yard pattern was still good. Holding at the neck base, I squeezed off a shot and he flipped. A second one took care of any getaway possibility. 18 lbs , 8 1/4 inch beard with 1 inch spurs. The God stated that it looked like that shot was at the limits of the Benelli with the Hevi-Shot #4's in it. Pacing off back to the calling location showed a distance of 83 yards!!! Once again (like last year) Thanks Turkey God !!
