Check this story out.  This couple was hiking in state park north of San Francisco when the husband was attacked my a mountain lion.  The mountain really messed this guy up.  At one point the husband tried to stab the lion in the eye with a pen. LOL!  The wife ended up beating the mountain lion with a log and it ran off.  Here is the link
