Will 330 Coniber Trap work for Coyotes?

Does any one know if using a 330 coniber will work for coyotes? It is on my own land and I know the trap is big enough to kill a coyote but are they to smart to fall for a bucket set. I know some of you might ask why I don't just use a leg hold but I want to kill them asap. I don't want to have to shoot them after the fact or walk up to a trap with a chewed off foot!!. Any tips or help would be great!!

I have heard of 330's working for coyote, situations like you would use a snare.  As far as buckets? No, your probably not going to have any luck with the coyote.  Me personally I would not set a 330 on dry land no matter how much private.  There is a lot more effective ways of catching coyotes.  And as far as them chewing their paw off, I have never had this happen with any canine.  They do not chew their paws, they bite at the trap. If you are using a laminated trap with extra swivels, this is the best, most humane way to go.  You could use snares, however, I'm not a snare man, I don't use them.  Not even for control work.

    Thanks for the help.

What size would you recomend? Also do you use bait or set it by a den?

Re: Will 330 Coniber Trap work for Coyotes?

Any 1 3/4 or 2 trap should work, make sure you double stake or use a grapple.  For canine trapping its best to look for travel routes.  Make 2 or 3 sets, use bait and gland lure or urine in one, and a call or food lure (mink gland is also good) in the other one or two. Mix it up.   You can use stock traps, but if you can get them laminated you'll be happier.  I've had alot of coyote pop the jaws out of 1.75 traps, however when they are laminated, it not only widens the surface of the jaw it strenghthens the jaw and the coyote don't pop them out.  Also, make sure the trap swivels at two points minimum.  Good luck trapping.

Please do all trapper who have fought hard to save trapping a favor; and find someone who can teach you the proper way to trap. All that you are gonna do is give trapping a black eye. 330's can't be set on land in Michigan. Read your rule book.

I read at the MI DNR site in the Fur Harvester Rules and I did not see where it said anything about 330's on private land. They are banned on public land but not private.

NOT TO WORRY I TOOK S&A SOMLEN'S ADVISE AND DIDN'T SET ANYOUT ON DRY LAND!!. But I also could not find where it said that they were banned on private land.

If anyone can show me a link where it states that 330's are banned on private land in MI please show me!! Sometimes those rule books are knida confusing so maybe i read it wrong or it's placed somewhere else on the rule book. Thanks for looking out for me I am glad  to see trappers trying to prevent a bad PR before it happens.

Re: Will 330 Coniber Trap work for Coyotes?

Last year in the Soo, a lady was trespassing and her wiener dog got caught in a legally set 220. They had town hall meetings and wanted to ban trapping in Chippewa county, of course they can't but still was bad press. The dog lived. It would have been a different story if it was a 330. It has been 3 years since I've trapped in Mi. maybe you can set a 330 on land but I still wouldn't. I live in NM now and we under the gun dailey on trapping. All the incidents that make the papers are usually set by kids or new guys that don't have a clue as to the rules.

I understand your concern with the way the media is now, trappers are held to a higher standard than what is legal or not. I know the way this country works if you caught a dog that was trespassing on your place you would have to defend yourself in court.  I am new to trapping and that is why I asked about it on the site and I had several people that I personaly know inform me about the dangers of doing so long before I ever set a trap in the woods. Ofcourse after speaking to people that trap I decided never to set one on land.

Re: Will 330 Coniber Trap work for Coyotes?

I wouldn't use 330 conibear for coyotes, and I am certain that snaring in weed patches or CRP grass would be much more effective. Using a large bait station in a CRP field and making nice trails with your pickup truck right past the bait station is the way to begin. Drive north and south past the large bait several times. Now drive past the bait several times in east-west direction. Be sure to drive both directions several times to make nice trails for the coyotes.  Now go out about fifty yards from the large bait and drive a circle around the bait.  Hang snares in your pickup tracks. If there is enough interest here, I will explain the method in better detail. When I used to do this, I would post large signs at field entrance. WARNING    LARGE TRAPS SET.   This helps eliminate the chance of catching somebody's hunting dog.
